SolarEdge News - October 2009

WELCOME FROM THE CEO

Dear customers, partners, colleagues and friends of the solar community, In this issue of our e-Newsletter, I would like to share with you some of the progress we have made in the past two months. With the increased acceptance of the value of distributed architectures, the uniqueness of the SolarEdge approach and its merits is becoming widely recognized by the PV industry. As more PV installers, roof owners and investors worldwide become aware of the shining opportunity for maximizing solar energy yield while reducing cost and complexity, the demand for our Distributed Power Harvesting and Monitoring system steadily grows.
At the same time, SolarEdge is constantly seeking strong partnerships and effective distribution channels in all major PV markets. As such, we have opened our European headquarters in Germany, and announced new alliances with key players in the USA, Germany and Spain. We will continuously update our website regarding the availability of new distribution channels.
Last, I would like to thank many of you who visited our booth in the EUPVSEC tradeshow in Hamburg, and invite you all to join SolarEdge in its North America launch at the Solar Power International tradeshow at Anaheim California, October 27-29.

SOLAREDGE OPENS EUROPEAN HEADQUARTERS

SolarEdge has opened its offices in Germany. The European office will provide sales and technical support for the company's solar power harvesting and monitoring systems. Germany has long played a pioneering role in the development of the European solar industry and has been an early adopter of SolarEdge’s breakthrough technology. This location will allow us to quickly and thoroughly execute a comprehensive distribution strategy with dedicated support for customers and partners in key markets like Germany and throughout Europe.
HIGHLIGHTED PROJECT: 250KW ROOF, FRANCE

Isofotón, a leading European company in the design, manufacture and supply of solar energy Solutions, and SolarEdge, announced a joint partnership agreement for the development of an integrated power harvesting solution utilizing SolarEdge’s PowerBoxes.
In tandem, the companies signed a joint customer agreement with the French company Blue Ice. A first-of-its-size installation in France, Blue Ice headquarters will soon feature a 250 kilowatt PV system on its roof based on SolarEdge’s power harvesting solution. The installation will include 48 SolarEdge inverters and 1,137 Isofotón 220 watt mono crystalline modules with SolarEdge PowerBoxes (ASIC-equipped, smart junction boxes). This installation is one of several other projects to come, both in France and in Israel where Blue Power, the Israeli branch of Blue Ice, is developing PV projects of similar size and bigger, all powered by SolarEdge technology.
MONITORING VERSION 0.6 AVAILABLE

The SolarEdge solution includes built-in monitoring, which enables continuous performance tracking and automatic fault detection for each module, string and inverter. A new version of the Monitoring web portal was released, with the following highlights:
  • Additional automatic fault detection rules now alert on events such as panel partial shading, sub optimal panel energy output, string or cluster charge drop, and more. Thresholds can be adjusted for rule sensitivity customization.
  • Alerts are now automatically closed once the system detects the fault was resolved. Users can choose to receive automatic email notifications whenever alerts are opened and resolved, and can review open and resolved alerts online at all times.
  • New performance reports provide a comprehensive Site Status Report that includes per-component bottom lines and Periodic AC Energy Report with aggregated yield summary.
  • Performance chart clarity: automatic adjustment of the chart Y-axis zoom level and user selected highlighting of a chart’s multiple data series.
  • Immediate performance queries can be generated for any component at a click directly from the Site Layout screen.

FIRE SAFETY SPOTLIGHT: ARC PREVENTION

At high DC voltages like those present in PV installations, any disconnection, faulty connection or insulation defect in a current-carrying wire or connector can cause an arc, which is the continuation of current flow through the air. Arcs generate a lot of heat which in turn can cause a fire, as happened to a 380 kW system on the roof of a California Target store last April. In addition, arcs pose further danger of electrocution to PV installers and firefighters. Large PV installations may have thousands of contacts, each one a potential arc generator, especially when exposed to rodents, cable swinging, or human errors at installation, and while aging. When an arc is generated, the electrical noise level and behavior of the DC flow changes: in serial arcs voltage surge and impedance change are exhibited, while in parallel arcs current surge and voltage drop occur.
SolarEdge PowerBoxes can automatically detect and prevent arcs by sensing these changes as they occur. Once a PowerBox detects an arc it automatically shuts the module down, effectively terminating the arc and preventing its re-occurrence. Multiple detection by several PowerBoxes increases sensitivity and provides system owners with a built-in, efficient fire prevention solution, at no added cost.
