What Is NEM 3.0?

 

  • NEM (Net Energy Metering) is a billing program that enables homeowners to earn credits from the utility for power exported to the grid​
  • NEM 3.0 is the latest version of the program in California. which reduces the amount utilities are paying to homeowners for energy they produce​
  • Under NEM 3.0, selling power back to the grid will no longer be a main source of savings for Californians going solar and batteries will be required on most systems to maximize value

Who Is Affected by NEM 3.0?

  • Customers primarily serviced by: 
    • Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E)
    • Southern California Edison (SCE)
    • San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E)
  • California system owners with interconnection applications dated after April 14, 2023—applications dated before or on April 14, 2023, are still subject to approval by the utility

Everything You Need To Know About NEM 3.0

What is NEM 3.0?​

NEM 3.0 is a new version of the net energy metering (NEM) billing structure that goes into effect April 14th, 2023, in California, enabling utilities to reduce homeowner export rates​

Who is impacted by NEM 3.0?​

Customers of:​

  • Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E)​
  • Southern California Edison (SCE)​
  • San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E)​

When does NEM 3.0 take effect?​

NEM 3.0 takes effect on April 14, 2023, and applies to all systems with an interconnection application dated April 15, 2023, or later.

Can I avoid NEM 3.0?​

Yes. Obtain preferred NEM 2.0 status by working with one of our trusted installers to ensure your interconnection application is submitted to the utility by April 14th, 2023.

I already have solar. Does NEM 3.0 impact me?​

No. All systems with an approved interconnection application to the utility, dated on or before April 14th, 2023, will retain their current NEM 1.0 or NEM 2.0 status.​

If my system is under NEM 2.0, can I add battery storage and keep my status?​

Yes. If your system’s approved interconnection agreement was submitted to the utility by April 14th, 2023, you may add battery storage to your system and retain your NEM 2.0 status - even after the April 14th, 2023, deadline.​

If a NEM 1.0 or NEM 2.0 system changes ownership, will it retain its original NEM status?​

Yes. The system will retain its original NEM 1.0 or NEM 2.0 status.

Can a battery help me save money in NEM 3.0?​

Yes. To maximize savings and keep bills low in NEM 3.0, homeowners can use a battery to store excess power during the day for use at night when rates are highest.​

Will I be able to sell excess energy back to the grid in NEM 3.0?​

Yes. However, your rate of compensation will be reduced by the utility.​

If my system was installed under NEM 1.0 or 2.0, should I add a battery?

Batteries are always great option for anyone looking to protect themselves against grid and weather-related outages. Adding battery to your system will not affect your current NEM status.​
