How ‘Battery Bonus’ Works

  • During regular system usage: your home runs on energy produced by your solar system and complements it with power from the battery and/or the grid.
  • During an event: your battery will automatically discharge at your committed capacity. Meanwhile, you’ll still be able to source energy from the grid to keep the entire household running, uninterrupted.
  • After an event: your solar system will automatically recharge your battery after the event ends.

What is the Hawaiian Electric ‘Battery Bonus’ incentive?

Hawaiian Electric is paying its customers on O‘ahu or Maui to add a battery of any size to an existing or new rooftop solar system. This one-time incentive will help move Hawai‘i toward its goal of 100% clean energy by 2045.

How much money can I earn?

With only 50MW (megawatts) of committed capacity for O'ahu and 15MW for Maui, homeowners are urged to move fast, before the cap is reached. Plus, the quicker you sign up, the more you could get paid.

  • Get accepted as part of the first 15MW of committed capacity and receive $850 per kilowatt (kW)—a 5kW system could mean up to $4,000
  • Sign up for the next 15MW and receive $750 per kW (O’ahu only)
  • Sign up for the last 20MW and receive $500 per kW (O’ahu only)
  • PLUS: $5 monthly credit from HECO per kW for 10 years

Program is subject to change by Hawaiian Electric Company at any time

How do I apply?

Work with your installer to apply. The application submission must show a building permit was submitted to determine and lock in your incentive payment, which will be paid after the system is installed and in operation.

For installers:

The enrollment is a four-part process after the battery is installed and interconnection forms are submitted through Hawaiian Electric’s online Customer Interconnection Tool.

  • Battery Bonus amendment must be submitted in the Customer Interconnection Tool, be sure to include the committed kW’s as well as the start and stop time
  • Seven days of operational data must be provided using this excel file – see handbook for additional instructions on how to submit the data
  • Submit your signed W9 to Hawaiian Electric via mail
  • SolarEdge Enrollment form must be completed and submitted
