800 VDC for
AI Data Centers

Grid to rack, in a single conversion.

SolarEdge delivers a complete DC-native, grid-to-rack powertrain for AI factories: a Solid State Transformer (SST), intelligent power distribution (iPDU), and native DC-UPS on one integrated architecture, managed by DataCenter OS.

Benefits

Power that reaches the rack

More tokens per megawatt Fewer conversions between the grid and the rack, so more of each contracted megawatt reaches compute.
Safety and protection designed in Protection coordinated across the whole powertrain, from the SST output to every rack feed.
An architecture that scales. Capacity is added in blocks, so growth is an install rather than a rebuild of the power chain.

Above 99%

SST efficiency, medium voltage to the 800 VDC bus

13.8/20/34.5 kV

Direct MV input

Up to 5.25 MW

Continuous, per block

800 VDC

Nominal bus, 1500 V engineered option

Preliminary, subject to change. Rated power is continuous, derated above +50 C and by elevation. Efficiency is SST conversion efficiency, medium voltage to the 800 VDC bus.

The Challenge

92% of data center operators cite utility capacity or transmission constraints as their most significant obstacle.

A data center gets a fixed amount of power from the utility. How much of it reaches the rack depends on the architecture in between. A conventional AC chain runs up to five conversion stages, and each one takes a share of the power and turns it into heat that then has to be cooled.

SolarEdge converts medium voltage straight to the 800 VDC rack in a single stage, above 99% efficient. Grid to rack, that is two conversion stages instead of five. More of the power a site has already paid for arrives where it does the work.

System Architecture

A single conversion Medium voltage straight to 800 VDC rack, above 99% efficient, with the intermediate conversion stages taken out of the chain entirely.
A single protection scheme Traditional chains assemble protection from separately specified devices. Ours is coordinated end to end, with continuous per-channel monitoring and solid-state interruption in tens of microseconds.
A single control loop Traditional architectures integrate source and buffer after the fact. Ours share one bus, co-controlled by the vendor that builds both, and engineered for stability from day one.
A single building block One 20-foot container up to 5.25 MW continuous, paralleled to campus scale, so the same unit serves a first deployment and a full site.

What changes in the power chain

Whole classes of gear leave the power chain: less hardware to buy, commission, and maintain, less floor space given over to it, and less heat to reject.

Equipment in the grid-to-rack path, for an equivalent block.

Equipment Conventional 480 VAC chain SolarEdge 800 VDC
MV step-down transformer Required Eliminated. The SST is the MV interface.
LV switchboard Required Eliminated
AC UPS with battery cabinets Required Replaced by the DC-UPS, on the same bus, with no AC to DC to AC cycle
Power distribution unit Required Eliminated
Remote power panel Required Replaced by the iPDU, with per-channel protection and monitoring
Rack AC-DC supply stage Required Eliminated on 800 V native racks
In-rack DC-DC conversion Required Unchanged. Stays in the compute tray.
Battery cells, MV utility feed, cooling Required Unchanged. Not in SolarEdge scope.

Applies to 800 V native racks. Comparison is against a conventional 480 VAC distribution chain for an equivalent block. SolarEdge supplies the SST, the iPDU, the DC-UPS and DataCenter OS as one co-controlled system on a single bus.

One system, four engines

Solid-State Transformer (SST)

Medium-voltage grid power converted directly to high-efficiency DC in a single stage. Three variants at 13.8, 20, and 34.5 kV, in a 20-ft container up to 5.25 MW continuous.

Intelligent Power Distribution (iPDU)

Per-channel solid-state protection and monitoring between SST and rack, with no arc and no mechanical wear.

DC-UPS

Holds the bus through GPU load steps and grid events, on the same bus as the source. Storage-agnostic: SolarEdge supplies the conversion and the interface, so the cells stay your choice.

Data Center OS

Telemetry, control and diagnostics across the powertrain from one software layer.

Protection designed into the architecture

Not added on top of it. Because the powertrain is a single integrated system rather than separately specified devices, protection is coordinated end to end, from the SST output to every rack feed, with no coordination gaps between vendors.

  • UL 347A. Certification pathway confirmed for the medium-voltage SST.

  • IEEE 1547.1-2020, UL 1741 SB and IEEE P2800. Grid connection, as applicable by region.

  • IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2. Designed to the standard for industrial cybersecurity.

  • Layered protection, coordinated from the SST output to every rack feed.

  • Solid-state interruption in tens of microseconds, with no arc and no mechanical wear.

  • Per-channel isolation and continuous monitoring on every rack feed.

  • Cell-level redundancy in every megawatt-class SST block.

  • Partial discharge measured well below the applicable standard limit, verified above rated voltage.

Component-level insulation standards are covered in the datasheet, available under NDA.

SolarEdge Powers Data Centers

Power electronics at industrial volume

Twenty years of high-power DC architecture, now applied at data center scale. More than 65 GW of DC power electronics shipped worldwide, over 4.6 million systems monitored in the field, and the manufacturing base to execute at gigawatt volume.

The same DC architecture that operates at 1500 V across utility-scale solar and storage, so compute, generation and storage sit on one DC platform rather than three separate ones.

Figures are company-wide and cover the full SolarEdge portfolio, not the data center platform.

FAQs

What is a Solid-State Transformer (SST)?

An SST is a power electronics device that replaces a traditional magnetic transformer and the downstream AC/DC conversion stage with a single semiconductor-based system. It converts medium-voltage AC directly to DC, functioning like a transformer and inverter combined in one device.

What voltage levels does it support?

Three variants interface at 13.8, 20 and 34.5 kV, delivering an 800 VDC nominal bus with a 700 to 900 V operating range. 1500 VDC is available as an engineered option

Does the SST include battery backup?

No. SolarEdge supplies the conversion and the bus interface, not the cells. The platform pairs the SST with a native DC-UPS connected directly to the DC bus, eliminating the AC to DC to AC conversion cycle used by traditional UPS systems.

What standards is it being certified to?

The SST is on a confirmed UL 347A pathway. Grid connection follows IEEE 1547.1-2020, UL 1741 SB and IEEE P2800 as applicable by region, and cybersecurity is designed to IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2.
